Suburb Profile for Greenwich
Greenwich is on The Lower North Shore which traces its history back to the Aboriginal rock carvings and middens that are hidden under local houses and in their gardens. Fishing was a drawcard for Aboriginal and European settlers, followed by the emergence of a truly Australian interpretation of European landscape painting by Tom Roberts, Henry Fullwood and others, at Curlew Camp, Mosman Bay and Balmoral. The region is bordered on three sides by water (Lane Cove River, Sydney Harbour and Middle Cove) and extends as far ‘up’ as Chatswood, providing every kind of home and a variety of amenity. Train provides convenient access to areas West and North of the Harbour Bridge. Buses and ferries rule to the East. Significant commercial centres at Chatswood, St Leonards, Lane Cove West and North Sydney provide work opportunities for those not commuting to the Sydney CBD or North Ryde and Macquarie Park.
