Putney is in Sydney’s Northern Suburbs. Before the Harbour Bridge, big houses on big blocks of land followed the Northern railway line from Denistone to Hornsby. After the Harbour Bridge the Northern Suburbs played second fiddle to the Upper North Shore for a few generations and now the growth of Sydney towards the west is changing everything again. In the intervening years the population density around railway stations and commercial centres has increased. Ryde, particularly, has transformed. Residential development has filled the empty spaces near the Parramatta River and North Ryde and Macquarie Park are now Sydney’s tech and medical hub. One major appeal of Ryde is its access to almost all of Sydney relatively directly by two different train lines and myriad roads. The M2 expressway, Lane Cove tunnel and railway to Macquarie Park vastly reduced commuting times although road commutes can still blow out if there is a breakdown or bad accident.
