Rouse Hill is in the Hills District, also known as Sydney’s ‘bible belt’ for the number of evangelical churches in the region, particularly Hillsong, which takes its name from its location. After the Cumberland Plan was abandoned in the 1960s, local orchardists, farmers and market gardeners subdivided their properties into five acre blocks and sold them to people looking for more space than the Northern Suburbs and Upper North Shore could offer. Fortunes were made and some spectacular houses and gardens created. Planning rules have relaxed since then. Conventional neighbourhoods and medium-density have been in the southern end of the region since the late 1970s. Commuting to the CBD from here is notoriously expensive on the tollways designed to make it easier, but access to the West and North West and Northern Suburbs, including North Ryde and Macquarie Park is relatively painless.
